Kids' Toolbox for Success Summer Camp

Kids' Toolbox for Success offers full day summer programs for students ranging in age from 9-18 years. Speaking, listening and social skills are essential to successful educational, vocational and social outcomes for people of all ages. Children, teens and young adults between the ages of 5 and 18 can benefit from structure and practical opportunities that facilitate ease in using the tools for improved interpersonal relationships, classroom performance and leadership skills. This day camp serves as an academic and/or social bridge for students on summer break. We have put together a program that is less structured than the one or two week intensive sessions. The programs are designed to provide interactive experiences for improved quality of life and dignity for children, youth and adults who experience challenges in communication and/or social skills and seem to demonstrate difficulty navigating effectively in the day to day experiences.

Training will focus on strengthening communication skills regarding relationships, written expression and speech delivery in realistic situations of different levels of communication skills. While students of various age ranges will participate, the experiences are designed to not only open their eyes to their responsibilities in every communication opportunity as one that can lead to success or failure, but to facilitate best practices that consider their future plans and the skills needed to accomplish their personal goals. Students will enjoy fun and interactive exercises in communication and academic enhancement that encourage learning, independence and creativity.

Students will be thrust in simulated social, educational or business situations where they will use communication skills expected in different situations, i.e. students, educators, corporate executives, professional athletes, college students, physicians, therapists, small business owners, and entertainers. They will learn how to critique different professional types and give their personal commentary on each. In order to accomplish this task, students will opt to participate in several programs that address their personal goals. Following an initial consultation and a needs assessment, students will participate in either one-week or two-week communication programs with twice a month week-end refresher program options. Five programs are available depending on the students' goals and time commitment available.

We have put together a program that is less structured than the one or two week intensive sessions. Students will enjoy fun and interactive exercises in communication and academic enhancement that encourage learning, independence and creativity. The day begins with breakfast when students interact with each and decide which academic enhancement classes they will attend. While the schedule reflects a typical day, each day may be different depending on the students' choices and when a field trip is scheduled. Field trips may be half-day or all day. Information regarding these excursions will be forthcoming as details are finalized. A notebook will be used to collect each day's activities with take-home practice materials. Students will provide their own snacks and lunches each day. Snack and drink machines are available for the campers to purchase snacks. Cell phones may be brought to the camp and used for emergencies only. Otherwise, cell phones are expected to be off during camp activities. Parents may contact the Program Administrator for messages.

Intensive Programs

Intensive programs allow for learning of concepts and/or skills through instruction and structured practice of a specific topic, usually in 90 minute sessions. Students have the option of choosing up to five (5) intensive programs to have a part-day or full-day experience. When one of the intensive programs is chosen, the goal is to achieve focused attention in a specific area, such as articulation, pragmatics or language. These two-week programs are conducted by appropriately trained and certificated instructors and/or speech pathologists.
